Poonugala, Wewelthalawa

Road to Poonugala

For 32 school children from Wewelthalawa the KG/Dehil/Poonugala Tamil Maha Vidyalaya school in Poonugala is 8 km and more away from their home. The road to the school was built by the British in colonial times, but nothing has been done to it since then. It is therefore in a desolate condition and only passable by three-wheeler or motorbike. Even with the three-wheeler, the children need 1 hour to travel from home to school. For the parents of the children (all plantation workers), the costs of Rps 3000.00 (approx. Fr. 16.00) per month are not affordable, and the parents have to take their children out of school again and again.

Lankahelp was therefore asked by the headmaster if it would be possible to cover these costs. Lankahelp has decided to pay for the travel costs to school for these 32 children.

In addition, Lankahelp pays for the costs of two substitute teachers who provide after-school and weekend tutoring for all the students.
