Women Initiative Mayomi

Mayomi, a young woman from Negombo, taught herself how to crochet and taught this technique to women from her grandfather’s village near Kurunegala. In the meantime, Mayomi supports and employs 12 women.

These women are grateful and proud to be able to contribute to their livelihoods through their extra work. Lankahelp is very committed to paying the women a fair price and has increased the standard wage.

Our visit 2026 – A look behind the scenes at the Mayomi Women’s Initiative

During our visit this year, we were once again able to spend time with Mayomi and her dedicated team. At present, the focus of their work is on producing the crocheted animals we have ordered, which is why production of the reusable sanitary pads has been temporarily put on hold.

We were impressed by the great care, patience and creativity with which the women carry out their work. At the same time, Stefan, who has been our managing director since 1 January, gained an in-depth insight into the menstrual health project and the production of the reusable sanitary pads. The personal exchange once again highlighted just how important this work is for these women.
