These women are grateful and proud to be able to contribute to their livelihoods through their extra work. Lankahelp is very committed to paying the women a fair price and has increased the standard wage.
Women Initiative Mayomi

Mayomi, a young woman from Negombo, taught herself how to crochet and taught this technique to women from her grandfather’s village near Kurunegala. In the meantime, Mayomi supports and employs 12 women.
Our visit to the Mayomi Women’s initiative 2024
We travel with Mayomi, the head of the women’s initiative, and her family to visit the seamstresses in Nikaweratiya. Mayomi has already announced our arrival and tells us that the women are very excited and looking forward to meeting us. They give us a very warm welcome. After the greeting we are immediately asked how long the project will continue and how long they can still work for Lankahelp. We tell them that we will definitely continue the project this year and hope that it continues next year. We agree that we will announce any changes at least ½ year in advance.
The market for crocheted “animals” has completely collapsed in Sri Lanka. The women now only produce crochet items for Lankahelp. We have again brought a lot of new items to sell at the fairs/Christmas markets and at Vaduz on Ice.
