Drinking water well

drinking water well

1st drinking water well in Batticaloa district, by the school BT/BW/Periyapullumalai. In mountainous areas, clean drinking water is usually not a problem. In Batticaloa district, however, water is very scarce. The schools do not have wells or water connections. The children take their water from home. However, this is usually not enough for a sufficient supply. Many children also do not have the possibility to bring water with them, which can then lead to bigger problems (dehydration).

Our research has shown that drilling and installing a well costs about CHF 1,400. For the time being, Lankahelp has had one well built for the BT/BW/Periyapullumala school. More will hopefully follow.

At the school where the well was drilled, the borehole has been completed and the water pump is pumping water into the storage tanks. At our request, a washbasin with 5 taps is currently being built. Everything has to be robust, as around 240 pupils attend this school. Once completed, a generally accessible tap will also be installed outside the school grounds. As a result, the water does not need to be brought to the village and school every 14 days in a truck.

The progress and changes at the Periyapullumalai school are being monitored. The well in front of the school grounds has been completed and is working. Now the community members can fetch their water there free of charge.

Unfortunately, we notice that the taps in the well in the school building are no longer working. The material is from China and has a lifespan of only 3 – 4 months – unimaginable for us.

We are asked if we could repair the toilets, school desks and school chairs. The school also needs a filter for the water, as the water becomes sandy even at great depths during the rainy season.
